Versailles (2015) is a Franco-Canadian historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Louis XIV has just wrested control from the council that governed France through his childhood. His gamble: build a palace thirty kilometres outside Paris, transplant the entire nobility there, and keep every rival where he can see them.

The show tracks what that gamble actually costs. Courtiers scheme in doorways, Louis's brother Philippe nurses wounds that run deeper than politics, and the construction site churns alongside the intrigue. George Blagden plays the young king as someone with a grand vision and almost no one he can trust — each episode peels back another layer of that isolation. Alexander Vlahos gives Philippe a storyline that could carry its own series. Directors Jalil Lespert and Christoph Schrewe steered the show across three seasons, wrapping in 2018 with over twenty-five episodes.

The production — a BBC/Canal+ co-production — brought period drama budgets rarely seen on television at the time: real historical locations, thousands of hand-built costumes, and the kind of moral ambiguity that makes a seventeenth-century court feel uncomfortably familiar.
