Love and Death

Love and Death (1975) is Woody Allen's historical comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Allen plays Boris, a cowardly Russian aristocrat dragged against his will into the age of the Napoleonic wars.

Boris is scared of everything: war, duels, his own shadow. What he isn't scared of is his hopeless crush on his cousin Sonja, played by Diane Keaton. She fires off philosophical paradoxes and keeps marrying the wrong men. When Napoleon invades Russia, the two of them hatch an absurd scheme to assassinate the emperor, debating God, morality and the point of living all the way there. The film runs as one long parody of Russian literature and European art cinema.

Allen shot it in France and Hungary, sending up Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Bergman and Eisenstein, with a score lifted from Prokofiev. Many fans rate it the peak of his early, purely comic run, just before Annie Hall. Stream Love and Death (1975) online on iFILM.
