Synopsis
Alice (1990) is a Woody Allen fantasy-comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Mia Farrow plays Alice Tate, a Manhattan socialite sixteen years into a comfortable, airless marriage to a wealthy financier played by William Hurt.
Alice's days run on autopilot: private schools, charity lunches, a husband who stopped noticing her sometime around the Reagan administration. A back spasm sends her to Dr. Yang, a Chinatown herbalist who hands out more than pain relief. His teas and tinctures leave Alice invisible to the people around her, able to hear their unguarded thoughts, and eventually face-to-face with a ghost or two. Joe Mantegna is the jazz musician who catches her eye. Alec Baldwin, Judy Davis and Blythe Danner fill out the orbit — Allen's usual trick of stacking the supporting cast.
The film sits beside The Purple Rose of Cairo and Another Woman in Allen's run of New York fairy tales for adults. He wrote the script for Farrow and kept it light: no heavy lessons, just a woman who needed magic to see what was already there. Stream Alice (1990) online on iFILM.
