Synopsis
Dutch (1991) is an American road comedy directed by Peter Faiman, written by John Hughes — watch it online on iFILM. Ed O'Neill stars as Dutch Dooley, a blue-collar guy who agrees to drive his girlfriend's prep-school son home for Thanksgiving.
The son, Doyle, is thirteen, rich by his father's money and convinced that anyone without a trust fund is beneath him. Dutch figures a few hours on the road will sort things out. Doyle has other plans — and before they hit the state line, the trip has already involved a hitchhiker gone wrong, a near-disaster at a gas station and a motel that no travel guide would ever recommend. JoBeth Williams plays the mother caught in the middle, and Christopher McDonald is the smug ex-husband who set Doyle's attitude in the first place.
Faiman directed this right after Crocodile Dundee, and his instinct for physical comedy and mismatched-pair dynamics carries the film. It's a straightforward holiday comedy from the Hughes era, built on the slow, grudging respect that grows between two people who start out hating each other.
