Then something starts happening to people they know. The government stays quiet. Doctors don't have answers. Friends begin to disappear. What begins as a story about freedom turns into something else entirely — about who gets to grieve, and who gets erased.

Davies, who lived through that era, based the characters on real people he lost. That specificity shows: the slang, the furniture, the dread are all precise. Stephen Fry and Keeley Hawes appear in supporting roles. When It's a Sin aired in February 2021, it became the most-streamed Channel 4 series in UK history within days of release.
