Synopsis
Barbarella (1968) is Roger Vadim's space-opera romp you can watch online on iFILM. In the 41st century, interstellar agent Barbarella, played by Jane Fonda, takes an order straight from the President of Earth: track down the missing scientist Durand-Durand before his positronic ray wipes out the universe.
The hunt drops her onto an icy planet near the star Tau Ceti. Along the way she meets a blind, wingless angel, a deranged Black Queen, and an Excessive Machine built to kill by pleasure, which backfires on its operator. Fonda changes costumes in almost every scene, and the whole plot hangs on her unflappable curiosity. Adapted from Jean-Claude Forest's French comic, the film never hides its origins: fur-lined spaceships, psychedelic interiors, foam-rubber sets.
Critics filed it under so-bad-it's-good on arrival, but over fifty years it has become a touchstone of retro-futurism and pop art. The villain's name later gave the British band Duran Duran their own. Stream Barbarella (1968) online on iFILM.
