Cassandro

Cassandro (2023) is a drama from director Roger Ross Williams — watch it online on iFILM. Gael García Bernal plays Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who builds an alter ego called Cassandro and takes the lucha libre world apart from the inside.

Lucha libre runs on masks and fixed roles: the rudo is the villain, the técnico the hero, and nobody breaks the code. Saúl fights without a mask, performs in sequins and feathers, and still wins matches. His character — dubbed the Liberace of Lucha Libre — fills arenas across Mexico and the United States. The cast includes Roberta Colindrez, Raúl Castillo, and Bad Bunny.

Williams made the Oscar-winning documentary God Loves Uganda before turning to narrative film. That background shows: Cassandro has the texture of something observed, not staged.
