Synopsis
Santa Sangre (1989) is an Italian-Mexican surrealist horror directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, a genuine cult classic you can watch online on iFILM. A young man named Fenix sits in a psychiatric ward, mute, living like a bird. His story emerges in fragments — a circus, a knife, blood, a woman without arms.
Fenix grew up performing in a traveling circus. His father was a knife-thrower and tattooist; his mother led an underground sect called Santa Sangre, devoted to a saint who lost her arms. The night his father severed his mother's hands and killed himself, Fenix was watching. Years later, he escapes the hospital and finds her — alive, armless, waiting. He becomes her hands. He does what her hands do. Women in the city start dying.
Jodorowsky's son Axel plays Fenix, and the film is built less around plot logic than around the physical vocabulary of grief and control. Shot in Mexico City with a cast mixing professional actors and actual circus performers, it draws on Jodorowsky's own memories of a traveling circus childhood.
