Synopsis
Marie Antoinette (2006) is Sofia Coppola's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Kirsten Dunst plays the teenage Austrian archduchess shipped off to marry the heir to the French throne, dropped into a court that treats her like a foreigner.
Versailles is no museum here. It's a gilded cage of rituals and whispers. Barely fifteen, the new dauphine drowns in gowns, pastries and protocol while her husband, the future Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman), keeps avoiding the marriage bed. Coppola refuses both the villain and the martyr; she gives us a confused girl handed a crown she never asked for, watched constantly, judged for everything. The Petit Trianon, the gossip, the slow rumble of an angry France — it's all there under the candy colors.
The film became famous for one bold move: New Order and Bow Wow Wow instead of harpsichords, a choice that split audiences in 2006. Milena Canonero's costumes took the Academy Award. Watch for Steve Coogan, Judy Davis and Rose Byrne, plus early glimpses of Tom Hardy and Jamie Dornan. Stream Marie Antoinette (2006) online on iFILM.
