Synopsis
The Hunter (2011) is an Australian psychological thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Willem Dafoe plays Martin, a hired gun sent into the Tasmanian highlands by a faceless biotech firm chasing an animal the world wrote off as extinct decades ago.
His target is the thylacine, the last marsupial tiger, whose genes someone is willing to pay a fortune for. Posing as a researcher, Martin disappears into the mountains for days at a time, laying traps along the same lonely route. Down in the valley he boards with the family of a missing guide: a sedated mother and two sharp kids who get under his skin faster than he planned. The longer the hunt drags on, the less sure he is who he is really working for.
Director Daniel Nettheim adapts Julia Leigh's debut novel, pinning most of the film on Dafoe's face and the empty ridgelines of the island. Sam Neill and Frances O'Connor fill out the smaller roles. It is a cold, patient picture about the cost of one last shot. Stream The Hunter (2011) online on iFILM.
