About

Synopsis

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) is Disney's adventure fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Richard Fleischer turned Jules Verne's novel into the studio's first big live-action production, with Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas and Peter Lorre leading the cast.

The 1860s. Sailors trade stories about a sea monster that splits ships in two, and an expedition sets out to hunt it down. The "beast" turns out to be the Nautilus, an impossible submarine built by Captain Nemo. Three men survive the wreck: Professor Aronnax, his assistant Conseil, and the brawling harpooner Ned Land, played by Douglas. Nemo hauls them aboard less as guests than as captives of his private war on the world's navies.

James Mason plays Nemo not as a villain but as a wounded idealist, and that tension is the heart of the picture. The film won two Academy Awards, for visual effects and art direction, and the mechanical squid attack and the Nautilus interiors still hold up.
