Synopsis
The Insider (1999) is Michael Mann's drama-thriller, and you can watch online as a quiet chemist risks everything to expose Big Tobacco. Russell Crowe and Al Pacino lead.
Fired from a major cigarette company, Jeffrey Wigand carries a secret its bosses will do anything to bury: the industry tweaks its product to make smokers more addicted. A 60 Minutes producer, Lowell Bergman, convinces him to say it on camera. What follows is a slow siege. Wigand faces threats, lawsuits and a marriage falling apart, while the network gets cold feet and nearly kills the broadcast. Bergman ends up fighting his own employer.
Crowe gained weight to play the broken but stubborn whistleblower, and Pacino is the reporter who values truth over his own job. Christopher Plummer turns up as anchor Mike Wallace. The film drew seven Oscar nominations and ranks among Mann's best.
