Jason Patric plays a man who looks easy to manipulate right up until he isn't. Rachel Ward and Bruce Dern round out a trio where loyalty is a currency nobody has and everybody pretends to spend. The film adapts Jim Thompson's novel — Thompson being the writer who made noir feel like a psychological trap rather than a detective story.
