One Hundred and One Dalmatians

One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) is a Disney animated classic you can watch online on iFILM. In rainy London, a dalmatian named Pongo decides his bachelor owner needs a wife, so he arranges a meeting in the park with a woman who happens to own a dalmatian too.

Soon Pongo and Perdita have a litter of fifteen puppies. Then Cruella De Vil sweeps in, a fur-obsessed acquaintance who wants the spotted pups for a coat. When the puppies vanish along with dozens more, the dogs of the city raise the Twilight Bark, passing the alarm from rooftop to alley until word reaches the countryside. The rescue falls to the animals themselves.

Directed by Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, and Wolfgang Reitherman, this was the first Disney feature made with xerography, copying the animators' drawings straight onto cels. The result is a sketchy, hand-drawn line you can still see in every frame. Cruella, all cigarette smoke and screeching brakes, remains one of the studio's best villains.
