That Night

Twelve-year-old Alice has spent the whole summer watching her seventeen-year-old neighbor Sheryl from across the street — what music she plays, who she fights with, how she carries herself. Sheryl barely knows Alice exists.

Sheryl is dealing with the kind of teenage love her parents are working hard to kill: a boyfriend her family disapproves of, a household where the pressure keeps building, and no clean way out. Alice ends up drawn into it, not by invitation but by proximity — the way children sometimes inherit the crises of the older people they admire.
