About

Synopsis

Wildflower (2023) is a Canadian-American drama directed by Matt Smukler — watch it online on iFILM. Kiernan Shipka leads a cast that includes Alexandra Daddario, Jean Smart, Jackie Weaver, and Charlie Plummer.

Bea Johnson has been the responsible one for as long as she can remember. Her mother is intellectually disabled — warm and loving, but unable to navigate the everyday decisions that Bea learned to handle years before most kids her age had to think about them. The extended family orbits around the household with the best of intentions and a complete inability to agree on what those intentions should look like in practice. The film spans Bea's life from birth to high school graduation, building a portrait of a young woman who had to figure out adulthood before adulthood arrived.

Smukler keeps the tone honest — no melodrama, no wallowing. Shipka plays Bea without performing strength; it's just there, quietly, in how she moves through scenes. The supporting cast adds texture without overwhelming the central story. This is a film about growing up inside a situation you didn't choose, and finding your own shape anyway.
