Two coroners, father Tommy (Brian Cox) and son Austin (Emile Hirsch), start the autopsy late at night. A storm hammers the building, and the deeper they cut, the less anything adds up: scorched lungs, shattered bones, a tongue sliced out, odd markings hidden under the skin. The unnamed Jane Doe seems to push back. Before long the two men realize they're locked in their own morgue with something that stopped being alive a long time ago.

Øvredal keeps almost the whole film in a single room and squeezes real dread out of the tight space, leaning on slow tension over cheap jolts. Cox and Hirsch play professionals, not victims, men who keep trying to explain the unexplainable right up to the end.
