Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth play the doomed pair, kept apart less by distance than by the hatred their families carry. The screenplay comes from Julian Fellowes of Downton Abbey, who eased the original verse for a wider audience. Then a street brawl wrecks everything: Romeo avenges a slain friend, kills Juliet's cousin Tybalt, and is driven into exile. What follows is a secret plan, a letter that never arrives, and an ending everyone already knows by heart.
