Synopsis

The Two Popes (2019) is a talky, sharp-witted drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Fernando Meirelles. Anthony Hopkins plays an aging Benedict XVI; Jonathan Pryce is Cardinal Bergoglio, soon to become Pope Francis.

Most of the film is two old men arguing. They disagree on almost everything about the church and faith, and they say so over wine, pizza and long walks through the Vatican gardens. One craves quiet and tradition. The other wants to throw the doors open. Their sparring slowly turns into trust, then into a handover of power Rome had not seen in six hundred years.

Anthony McCarten wrote the screenplay, drawing on the real events of 2012 and 2013. Hopkins and Pryce both earned Oscar nominations, as did the script itself. It is a small movie that rests entirely on two performances and barely needs a set. Stream The Two Popes (2019) online on iFILM.
