The book spent 45 years waiting for a film version; Lionsgate finally greenlit it with a $20 million budget, releasing it in September 2025.

The setup is merciless: fifty teenage boys line up at the northern border and start walking south. Drop below roughly three miles per hour three times and soldiers put you down. Last one standing gets anything he wants — money, wish granted, all of it. Raymond Garraty, number 47, played by Cooper Hoffman, keeps pace alongside Peter McVries (David Jonsson) and Gary Barkovitch (Charlie Plummer). Mark Hamill plays the Major, the man who runs the whole spectacle from an armored vehicle. Stephen King personally approved the cast before cameras rolled.
