The Woman in Red

Then one afternoon in a parking garage he watches a red dress billow up over an air vent, and his orderly life goes with it. Charlotte becomes his obsession. A devoted husband who would never have considered an affair turns into a clumsy schemer, inventing excuses, lying to his wife, and dragging his buddies into the mess. The trouble is that adultery proves a lot harder than it looks, and every attempt ends in fresh humiliation. The cast includes Kelly LeBrock, Charles Grodin, Gilda Radner, and Joseph Bologna.

Wilder both directed and wrote the script, reworking the French farce Pardon Mon Affaire into his own register. Stevie Wonder wrote "I Just Called to Say I Love You" for this picture, and the song went on to win an Oscar. Eighty-seven minutes of a midlife crisis played for laughs rather than dread.
