Synopsis

Frankie and Johnny (1991) is a romantic drama with a comic touch you can watch online on iFILM. Garry Marshall directs, and two heavyweights carry it, Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Johnny gets out of prison after a forgery rap and lands a job as a short-order cook in a New York diner. He is wide open, eager to start clean. Frankie waits tables at the same place and has long since shut the door on romance, having been let down too many times. Johnny falls for her almost on sight and courts her with stubborn, clumsy persistence. She deflects, jokes, slips away, and he keeps showing up. Between shifts, late-night talks, and plates of eggs, the film becomes a study of how hard it is to trust another person again.

Terrence McNally adapted the screenplay from his own stage play, and the intimacy shows: most of the story rests on two actors and a cramped kitchen. Pacino plays a quiet dreamer rather than a gangster, and the contrast lands every time. Stream Frankie and Johnny (1991) online on iFILM.
