Beverly is fifteen years old and set on becoming a writer. It's Connecticut in 1965, which already makes the odds long. Then she gets pregnant by Ray — sweet, well-meaning, and completely unprepared for adult life. Marriage follows. Then a son. Then years of working instead of studying, of dragging Ray through rehab, of writing whenever she can find ten minutes to herself. The film moves through roughly two decades of her life without softening much of it.
