Synopsis

Suffragette (2015) is Sarah Gavron's historical drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Carey Mulligan plays Maud, a London laundress pulled into the fight for the women's vote almost before she understands what it will cost her.

At first Maud only watches. Then she overhears the speeches, sees the police break up a march, and one day she throws the brick herself. Beside her stand pharmacist Edith (Helena Bonham Carter) and a careful organiser shadowed by Inspector Steed (Brendan Gleeson). Meryl Streep appears for barely two minutes as Emmeline Pankhurst, yet her few lines push the whole story forward.

Rather than parade the movement's famous leaders, the film follows the ones history barely recorded — working women who lost jobs, children and homes over a leaflet. Mothers, daughters, rebels, as the tagline puts it. The closing titles list, country by country, the year each finally won the ballot, and the roll runs all the way to 2015.
