Synopsis
C.R.A.Z.Y. (2005) is a French-Canadian coming-of-age drama by director Jean-Marc Vallée — watch it online on iFILM. Quebec, the 1960s and 70s. Zachary Beaulieu is the fourth of five brothers whose initials spell out the film's title. His mother thinks a Christmas birth gives him special gifts. His father just wants a son he recognizes.
Marc-André Grondin plays Zachary from childhood through a rocky young adulthood, orbiting Rolling Stones records and his father's unspoken disappointment. Michel Côté is the father — proud, loving, and genuinely unable to accept who Zachary is becoming. The family is loud and close and the distance between them is enormous.
The film swept the Jutra Awards (Quebec's equivalent of the Oscars) with 11 prizes and took Best Canadian Film at the Toronto International Film Festival. Jean-Marc Vallée later went on to direct Wild and Dallas Buyers Club. This earlier work is quieter and sharper. Stream C.R.A.Z.Y. (2005) on iFILM.
