Wild

Wild (2014) is a drama with Reese Witherspoon you can watch online on iFILM. Reeling from her mother's death and a marriage she wrecked herself, Cheryl Strayed sets out to do something she has no business attempting: hike over a thousand miles alone.

The route is the Pacific Crest Trail, a footpath threading the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades, where days pass without another voice. Cheryl is hopelessly unprepared. Her pack is too heavy to lift, her boots shred her feet, her stove won't take the fuel she bought. Laura Dern plays her mother, surfacing in sharp flashbacks that explain what Cheryl is running from and how her life came apart.

Director Jean-Marc Vallée made the film right after Dallas Buyers Club, with a screenplay by novelist Nick Hornby adapted from Strayed's own memoir. Both Witherspoon and Dern landed Oscar nominations for it. There is no tidy triumph set to swelling music here, just blisters, hunger, and long arguments with yourself.
