Synopsis
The Medusa Touch (1978) is a British-French supernatural thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jack Gold and based on Peter Van Greenaway's novel. Richard Burton leads the cast alongside Lino Ventura and Lee Remick.
A prominent novelist named Morlar is found in his London flat, skull caved in, clinging to life by a thread. French detective Brunel (Ventura), on assignment in London, pieces together the man's past with the help of his psychiatrist Dr. Zonfeld (Remick). What he uncovers is stranger than any murder motive: Morlar believed — and could apparently demonstrate — that his mind could trigger disasters. Plane crashes. Building collapses. His childhood is a catalogue of convenient deaths.
Burton plays Morlar as a man of complete cold conviction, which makes him far more disturbing than a standard villain. The film arrived in 1978 alongside the peak of the supernatural horror wave, but its detective-story structure keeps the horror grounded in something almost credible.
