Synopsis
Al Capone (1959) is available to watch online on iFILM — a tough American crime biography directed by Richard Wilson, with Rod Steiger in the title role and Martin Balsam as the journalist trying to keep up with the body count. The film traces Capone's trajectory from a Brooklyn nobody doing muscle work for Johnny Torrio to the man who effectively ran Chicago's underworld through most of the Prohibition era.
Steiger plays Capone without softening the edges. The rise unfolds through extortion, electoral corruption, and a willingness to remove anyone who becomes inconvenient. What the film does well is show the machinery — how political protection gets bought, how a racket turns into an empire, how violence becomes routine. It is a procedural as much as a portrait.
Unusually for 1959, Wilson kept the tone clinical rather than moralistic. Capone is not glamorized, and there is no redemption arc to tidy things up. The tagline promised the story "filmed with bullet force," and the film delivers on that — lean, specific, and more interested in cause and effect than in speeches.
