Synopsis
That Cold Day in the Park (1969) is a psychological thriller from director Robert Altman — watch it online on iFILM. Made before M*A*S*H put Altman on the map, it's an unsettling chamber piece that doesn't look like anything else in his filmography.
Frances, played by Sandy Dennis, is a wealthy, solitary woman in her early thirties living alone in Vancouver. She spots a silent teenage boy sitting in the cold park outside her window and invites him in. He barely speaks. At first that seems fine. Then her care tips into something else entirely — she removes his clothes, locks the door, sets rules he never agreed to. Michael Burns plays the boy with a blank stillness that makes the walls feel closer with every scene.
Altman refuses to frame Frances as simply a villain or a victim, which is what makes the film genuinely uncomfortable. It's slow, deliberate and stubbornly unresolved — the kind of thriller that stays with you not because of what happens but because of what it implies.
