A junior risk analyst finishes the work of a colleague who was just laid off and finds the catch: the firm's models are broken, its holdings are worth far less than the books claim, and the collapse is hours away. From there the story stays in glass offices and elevators. Senior partners are summoned after midnight to make one brutal call — dump the toxic assets first and wreck the market, leaving clients with nothing, or wait and go down with the firm. Jeremy Irons plays the bank's chilling chairman, Kevin Spacey a manager still clinging to a conscience, with Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci alongside.
Chandor built his debut feature on talk and numbers instead of action, and the tension never lets up. The tagline says it all: be first, be smarter, or cheat.
