Synopsis
The Wizard of Lies (2017) is an HBO crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. Robert De Niro plays a financier who fooled thousands of people for decades. And never once flinched.
The man is Bernie Madoff, whose respected investment firm turned out to be a Ponzi scheme worth tens of billions. Fresh deposits paid off older clients while the books were quietly faked. When the whole thing collapsed during the 2008 meltdown, the wreckage swallowed his own household too: his wife Ruth (Michelle Pfeiffer) and two sons who swear they knew nothing. The film cares less about the money than about how a family learns who their father and husband really was.
Director Barry Levinson adapts the book by reporter Diana Henriques, who turns up on screen playing herself. De Niro performs with almost no visible emotion, and that hollow stare lands harder than any outburst could. Hank Azaria and Lily Rabe round out the cast.
