Synopsis
Smart People (2008) is a comedy-drama directed by Noam Murro that you can watch online on iFILM. Professor Lawrence Wetherhold teaches literature at Georgetown and considers himself the sharpest mind in any room. His students quietly despise him, his kids have stopped expecting him at dinner, and his shot at the dean's chair is effectively dead.
Dennis Quaid plays a man who can quote Dostoevsky cold but has no idea what's happening inside his own house. A romance with his former student, now physician Janet Underghill (Sarah Jessica Parker), cracks the armour. Meanwhile, his freeloading brother Chuck (Thomas Haden Church) blows in and turns out to be the most emotionally alive person in the family. Elliot Page rounds out the cast as his overachieving daughter, adding another sharp angle to the domestic wreckage.
At 95 minutes, the film makes a quiet, sardonic case that intelligence without self-awareness is just a well-dressed dead end. Stream Smart People (2008) on iFILM.
