Synopsis
Language Lessons (2021) is a drama-comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Natalie Morales, who also stars in it. For his 45th birthday, Adam (Mark Duplass) gets a gift from his husband: 100 weekly Spanish lessons with Cariño, a teacher based in Costa Rica. He does not speak Spanish. He is not sure he wants to learn.
The early sessions are mildly awkward and quietly funny — their two video frames already tell you something about their lives. Then something terrible happens to Adam, and the weekly call with this near-stranger becomes the one fixed point in his week. Cariño has no reason to be there for him. She keeps showing up anyway.
Shot entirely as video calls, the film earns its constraint. Duplass and Morales build a friendship in the particular sideways way that remote connection actually works — through small observations, silences that stretch a beat too long, and things said in Spanish that do not quite get translated.
