The Fan

Bobby Rayburn signs with the San Francisco Giants for forty million dollars and is supposed to carry them to the World Series. Watching every game is Gil Renard, a knife salesman whose marriage and job are falling apart and who has poured what's left of himself into baseball. At first Gil just cheers. Then he starts to think the star belongs to him. When Rayburn drops into the worst slump of his career, his number-one fan decides to fix it himself, and the help he offers stops being help long before anyone notices.

Tony Scott shoots obsession like a fever: jagged cuts, storm light over the ballpark, the heat of big-league sport. De Niro plays a man whose grip on everything has come loose, and Snipes plays an athlete worn down by all that worship. Benicio del Toro and John Leguizamo turn up in smaller parts.
