About

Synopsis

Enemy of the State (1998) is Tony Scott's paranoid surveillance thriller you can watch online on iFILM. A successful Washington lawyer becomes a target of the intelligence apparatus and loses everything in a single night.

Robert Dean (Will Smith) bumps into an old acquaintance on the street, who slips a tape of a congressman's murder into his bag without him noticing. That footage is what a senior NSA official, Reynolds (Jon Voight), needs back, since he ordered the hit. From then on Dean is watched from every angle: satellites, wiretaps, cameras, trackers sewn into his clothes. His accounts freeze, his name is trashed, his wife thinks he is cheating. The only person willing to help is Brill (Gene Hackman), a former intelligence analyst who went off the grid to escape that same machine.

Scott built the film as a warning about total surveillance years before the subject became everyday news. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer packed the cast tight: Regina King, Barry Pepper, Jason Lee, Jake Busey and a very young Jack Black as an NSA tech. Hackman essentially plays an aged version of his character from The Conversation, a nod fans caught right away. Stream Enemy of the State (1998) online on iFILM.
