Deep Cover

Deep Cover (1992) is a crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Bill Duke and starring Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum. Police officer Russell Stevens goes undercover to penetrate an LA cocaine pipeline that runs all the way to a Colombian cartel with political cover at the top.

Stevens starts at the bottom — selling on street corners, building trust, moving up. The further in he gets, the harder it becomes to locate the line between the assignment and himself. Jeff Goldblum plays David Jason, a lawyer who supplies legal cover for drug money and holds a genuinely unsettling worldview: that crime and capitalism follow the same rules, just with different paperwork. Their professional alliance keeps slipping into something murkier than either wants to admit.

Bill Duke made a lean, unromantic film — no heroic finale, no clean moral resolution. Fishburne carries every scene on controlled, quiet intensity. The movie has a cult following for good reason: it came out the same year as Reservoir Dogs and Boomerang, and it belongs in the same company.
