Synopsis
Blithe Spirit (1945) is a British fantasy comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director David Lean adapted Noël Coward's stage hit, casting Rex Harrison and Margaret Rutherford — and the film went on to win an Academy Award for Special Effects, a rare distinction for a comedy of that era.
Novelist Charles Condomine invites a medium to his home purely for research. Madame Arcati, played by Rutherford with manic delight, accidentally summons the ghost of his first wife Elvira — sharp-tongued, jealous, and visible only to Charles. His current wife Ruth has no idea why her husband keeps talking to thin air. Charles now has two marriages running simultaneously, one of them posthumous.
Coward wrote the original play in five days in 1941; it ran in London for nearly two years straight. Lean shot the adaptation in three-strip Technicolor, giving the ghost sequences a colour palette no stage production could match. Stream Blithe Spirit (1945) online on iFILM.
