Health inspector Elizabeth notices that her boyfriend has gone cold and unfamiliar, as if someone scraped out everything human in him. Her coworker Matthew Bennell, played by Donald Sutherland, hears the same complaint from others. At first it looks like mass hysteria. Then the truth lands: an alien organism duplicates people while they sleep and discards the originals. Trust becomes impossible. Brooke Adams, Leonard Nimoy and a young Jeff Goldblum round out the cast.
