About

Synopsis

The Green Mile (1999) is a supernatural drama directed by Frank Darabont — watch it online on iFILM. Tom Hanks plays Paul Edgecomb, a death-row corrections officer at a Southern prison in the 1930s whose daily job is walking condemned men down the worn wooden floor to the electric chair.

A new inmate changes everything. John Coffey — a towering, soft-spoken giant charged with murdering two young girls — arrives played by Michael Clarke Duncan in a performance that is hard to shake. Coffey is afraid of the dark and weeps at the pain of others. Slowly Paul comes to realize the man's hands hold something that has no rational explanation. Around them, sadistic guard Percy Wetmore (Doug Hutchison) and unhinged prisoner "Wild Bill" Wharton (Sam Rockwell) keep the block on the edge of violence while Paul wrestles with what justice actually means.

Based on Stephen King's 1996 serial novel and running nearly three hours, the film earns every minute. Darabont had already turned King's prison world into cinema gold with The Shawshank Redemption; here he blends bleak institutional detail with something quieter and stranger.
