About

Synopsis

The Firemen's Ball (Hoří, má panenko, 1967) is a Czech comedy directed by Miloš Forman that you can watch online on iFILM. It was the last film he made in Czechoslovakia before leaving for the United States, co-produced by Italian producer Carlo Ponti.

A small-town fire brigade throws a retirement party for their aging chief. On the programme: a raffle, a beauty pageant, dancing, a proper send-off. None of it goes as planned. The raffle prizes vanish one by one. The girls refuse to line up for the pageant. The guest of honour waits in his chair for a tribute that keeps getting pushed back. Then someone's house catches fire.

Forman cast non-professional actors from the region, which gives every scene a texture that rehearsal cannot produce. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968. Watch The Firemen's Ball (1967) online on iFILM.
