Bubble Boy

Bubble Boy (2001) is a comedy adventure by Blair Hayes you can watch online on iFILM. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jimmy, a young man born without an immune system who has spent his whole life inside a plastic bubble in his bedroom, watched over around the clock by his mother.

From behind the plastic, Jimmy quietly fell for the girl next door, Chloe (Marley Shelton). Then he learns she is leaving for Niagara Falls to marry someone else. Rather than sit and watch it happen, he builds a portable bubble suit and sets off across the country to reach her before the wedding. The road throws bikers, circus folk, a strange cult and Danny Trejo at him, and the America of this movie is wall-to-wall oddballs.

The film is deliberately goofy, very much in the teen-comedy mold of the early 2000s, and it is most interesting today as an early Gyllenhaal role. Zach Galifianakis and Verne Troyer turn up in small parts. It is a light road trip about the idea that there might be a life worth living outside your own bubble.
