Synopsis
The African Queen (1952) is John Huston's adventure romance, free to watch online on iFILM. It's 1914, deep in German East Africa, and the First World War has just reached the jungle. A gin-soaked riverboat captain and a prim missionary's sister are thrown together on a battered little steamer.
Humphrey Bogart plays the scruffy Charlie Allnut; Katharine Hepburn is the upright Rose Sayer. They can barely stand each other. Then a German gunboat blockades the river, and the mismatched pair hatches a reckless scheme: take the leaky African Queen downstream through rapids and leech-filled swamps, then ram the warship with homemade torpedoes. The trip wears them both down. The drunk sobers up; the spinster learns to fight.
Huston shot much of the film on location in the Congo and Uganda, where nearly the whole crew came down with dysentery while he and Bogart kept healthy on whisky. The role earned Bogart his only Academy Award. Watch The African Queen (1952) online on iFILM.
