Synopsis
A Pale View of Hills (2025) is a Japanese-British drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Kei Ishikawa adapts Kazuo Ishiguro's debut novel — 123 minutes of carefully layered memory, set across two countries and three decades.
Yoh Yoshida plays Etsuko in 1980s England: a quiet woman carrying the weight of her eldest daughter's death, visited by her younger daughter Niki (Camilla Aiko) and reluctant to explain either her past or herself. Her mind keeps going back to postwar Nagasaki, where Suzu Hirose plays the same woman as a young pregnant wife. There, Etsuko grew close to her neighbor Sachiko — played by Fumi Nikaido — a widow raising a child alone, restless and barely holding it together. The further the flashback goes, the harder it becomes to trust Etsuko as a narrator.
Produced by Number 9 Films, BUN-BUKU and U-NEXT, the film runs two timelines on a collision course, building quietly toward something the characters never quite say out loud. Stream A Pale View of Hills (2025) online on iFILM.
