Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) treats Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) with talk alone, using the new technique pioneered by his older colleague in Vienna. That colleague is Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), who first sees Jung as his heir and later as a rival. Sabina, meanwhile, recovers, sharpens, and walks into Jung's study as far more than a case. Letters, jealousy and forbidden desire pull the two founding fathers of psychoanalysis apart.

Christopher Hampton adapted his own stage play, itself drawn from the surviving correspondence of the real people involved.
