Synopsis

The film tracks twenty years of their lives. Both men go through girlfriends, marriages, and affairs, yet neither manages to form a real connection with anyone. Candice Bergen, Ann-Margret, and Rita Moreno play the women who pass through — and eventually leave. Nicholson's character is no charmer here. He's cold, self-absorbed, and getting worse.
Screenwriter Jules Feiffer, best known for his caustic political cartoons, built the script around male delusion and emotional stagnation. The film caused immediate controversy on release — a U.S. Supreme Court case over "obscenity" ultimately ruled it a work of art.
