Susan runs a glossy Los Angeles art gallery and shares a cold, immaculate house with a husband who is rarely home. Then a package arrives: a novel manuscript from the ex-husband she walked out on two decades ago. It is dedicated to her. As she reads, the pages pull her into the story of Tony Hastings, a math professor whose family drive across a dark Texas highway turns brutal — and then bends toward revenge. The further Susan reads, the more she grasps what the book is really saying to her.

Ford cuts between two worlds: the icy art scene and a scorched stretch of West Texas, stitched together until they bleed into each other. Michael Shannon plays a weary lawman, Aaron Taylor-Johnson a feral drifter.
