Synopsis

The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970) is an Italian-German historical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Vittorio De Sica and based on Giorgio Bassani's novel. It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Ferrara, late 1930s. Mussolini's racial laws are closing in on the city's Jewish community. The Finzi-Continis, a wealthy aristocratic family, find their own answer: retreat behind the walls of their estate, where the tennis courts are still open and summer evenings feel untouched. Young student Giorgio (Lino Capolicchio) falls for the elusive Micòl (Dominique Sanda), who lets him close enough to feel welcome — and never quite close enough to stay.

De Sica frames a love story inside a slow-moving catastrophe. The garden that feels like shelter is also a trap closing without anyone noticing. Made twenty-five years after the war, the film remains one of cinema's sharpest portraits of how ordinary life persists until the moment it simply cannot.
