Synopsis

Harold and Maude (1971) is Hal Ashby's dark comedy and love story you can watch online on iFILM. A young man fixated on death falls for a 79-year-old woman who is wildly alive.

Harold (Bud Cort) stages fake suicides to rattle his rich, distracted mother, drives a hearse and crashes strangers' funerals out of boredom. At one of them he meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), who steals cars, sits for art classes and treats every day like her last. Their odd, tender friendship grows into something his appalled family can't make sense of.

Ashby balances grief and farce, and Cat Stevens wrote the entire soundtrack. The film flopped on its 1971 release, then became a cult favorite over the decades and earned a place in the National Film Registry. Short, bright and refusing to turn sentimental, it's a movie about giving up the rehearsal of dying. Stream Harold and Maude (1971) online on iFILM.
