Synopsis
The Colossus of Rhodes (1961) is a historical adventure you can watch online on iFILM — and the debut feature of Sergio Leone, produced as an Italian-Spanish-French co-production long before his Dollars Trilogy made him famous. Rory Calhoun plays Darios, an Athenian war hero who sails to the island of Rhodes for what he expects to be a relaxed visit. It does not stay relaxed.
Rhodes is under the grip of the tyrant Xerxes, and his court is packed with informers and sycophants. Darios walks into the middle of two separate conspiracies: a Rhodian patriot faction planning an uprising, and a shadowy group of Phoenician agents running their own scheme. Both sides want Darios for their own reasons, and the enormous bronze Colossus newly installed at the harbor entrance turns out to be more than an ornament — it conceals a military apparatus capable of deciding the whole conflict.
Leone directed this peplum (sword-and-sandal epic) strictly within genre conventions — large sets, sea battles, a cataclysmic finale — but his interest in betrayal, shifting loyalties, and a single man caught between opposing powers is already visible. Essential viewing for anyone tracing how Leone developed his craft. Stream The Colossus of Rhodes (1961) in full online on iFILM.
