Synopsis
A Better Life (2011) — watch online on iFILM, director Chris Weitz's quiet drama starring Demian Bichir. Carlos is an undocumented Mexican immigrant working as a gardener in the wealthy neighborhoods of East Los Angeles, scraping together enough to keep his teenage son Luis off the streets and out of the gangs that run their block.
He borrows money to buy a used truck — his shot at running his own landscaping business. On the first day, the truck gets stolen. Without it, there's no work; without work, no way to pay the debt or build anything for his son. Carlos and Luis go looking for the truck together, moving through parts of the city Carlos knows and Luis has been edging toward. It's not a chase movie. It's two people, not quite on the same wavelength, figuring out what they owe each other.
